Vancouver - Annual 2007

Where old money meets new: South Granville, once a pokey outpost for the Tony Shaughnessy residential neighbourhood, has come into its own as a vibrant retail destination.

EAT: Chow Restaurant

Chow (3121 Granville St., 604-608-2469) has fully embraced the citywide move toward eating local — the menu lists all of the regional suppliers, like Chilliwack’s Polderside Farms, which provides the organic chicken for a dish served with Japanese eggplant purée, quinoa with braised endive, crispy panko and orange zest-cilantro-mint gremolata.

BUY: Dyrberg/Kern

Cases and cases of sparkling costume jewellery are on display in North America’s first Dyrberg-Kern concept store. 3030 Granville St., 604-730-5001.

SEE: Monte Clark Gallery

Many of the city’s contemporary art galleries are located on South Granville Rise, between 6th and 16th Avenues; Monte Clark Gallery (2339 Granville St., 604-730-5000) showcases some of the most compelling installations by local artists like Scott McFarland and Douglas Coupland.

EAT: Rangoli Restaurant

Kid brother to next-door fine dining establishment Vij’s, Rangoli (1488 W. 11th Ave. 604-736-5711) serves elegant and inspired Indian cuisine — try spicy pulled pork on sautéed greens with sour cream chutney and chapatti, or portobello mushroom and red bell pepper curry on paneer with beet salad and naan.

SHOP: Peridot

Shabby-chic housewares and dainty accessories are set off by organic, modern paintings by local artist Patricia Larsen. At Peridot, 1512 W. 14th Ave., 604-736-4499.
