Vancouver - Annual 2007

In Vancouver's city centre, urban professionals dodge the crowds shopping Robson Street, and rabble-rousers navigate the theatres, pubs and dance clubs of the Granville Street thoroughfare.

EAT: Sciué

Sciué (800 W. Pender St., 604-602-7263), meaning “good and fast” in Italian, serves food that is exactly that: Roman street fare. Think gourmet panini, perfectly al dente pasta salads and the best thin-crust pizza in town.

SHOP: Burrard & Alberni

Vancouver’s luxury retail market has exploded in the last few years, and nowhere is this more apparent than at the intersection of Burrard and Alberni, where the newest kid on the block, Tiffany (723 Burrard St., 604- 630-1300), has taken up residence alongside Hermès, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Coach, Betsey Johnson and others.

SEE: The Mound

“The Mound,” a 25-foot hillock at Robson Square, provides the perfect vantage point to view the Arthur Erickson-designed law courts: a 55-storey office tower tipped on its side and capped with landscaping (starring native plants like vine maples) designed by Cornelia Oberlander.

BUY: John Fluevog

Local shoemaker to the stars (Madonna is a fan) John Fluevog (837 Granville St., 604-688-2828) recently introduced two ecofriendly lines: “Dogs” are completely vegetarian (using nonleather synthetic); “Earth Angels” have a tiny footprint no matter what your size — they’re 100 percent biodegradable.

DO: Seventy Two Sports Bar

Corporate suits kick back at Seventy Two Sports Bar (112-1025 Robson St., 604-646-4031), where you can watch a Canucks game, or any other sporting event, on your own plasma screen — each booth has one.
