Where History Meets Art in Northern New Mexico
A GuestLife New Mexico Great Gallery
Located in historic Chimayó on Highway 76, The Chimayó Trading & Mercantile building is more than 100 years old, a local landmark for many decades. The structure has been beautifully restored from the former Martinez mercantile building. It stands as a superb example of traditional Northern New Mexico architecture with handcrafted vigas, latillas, and thick adobe walls. Chimayó Trading Del Norte is located in Ranchos de Taos in the St. Francis Church Plaza. The church and plaza were built between 1772 and 1816, the church is considered to be one of the most photographed structures in the United States.
We offer an extensive collection of both contemporary and histocial Pueblo pottery from San Ildefonso, Santa Clara, Ohkay Owingeh (San Juan) and Jemez pueblo, as well as Navajo pottery by Alice Cling, Rose Williams, Susie Crank, and Sue Ann Williams. We also carry a large selection of Casas Grandes pottery from award-winning potters like Juan Quezada, Lydia Quezada, Noe Quezada, Jorge Quintana, and other accomplished potters from Mata Ortiz.
Our wonderful collection of paintings include work by R. Brownell McGrew in oil as well as some of his very rare pencil sketches. Also featured are works by well known painters Pablita Velarde, Harrison Begay, and R.C. Gorman. Other artists we represent are Michelle Tsosie Sisneros, Jan Terry, Lucia Gonzalez, Diana Bryer, Cami Thompson, Tommy Montoya, and many others.
Our Navajo rugs are just as impressive. We represent the Laughing family from Crystal, New Mexico. They are awardwinning weavers who primarily weave traditional and contemporary designs in natural and vegetal colored wool. Other accomplished weavers we carry are Martha Smith, Angela Begay, and Nellie Betsui, Mary Yazzie, Lavera Blake, and Emily Malone.
Both galleries also feature Hopi Kachinas by Glen Fred, handmade drums by Lee Lujan from Taos Pueblo and fused glass by George Zarolinski. Our jewelry collection includes Zuni and Navajo jewelry by noted jewelers Daniel Sunshine Reeves, Wayne Muskett, Lena Boone, Faye Quandalacy, and jewelers Gabriel Abrums, Ralph Sena, and Charlie Favour.
