Contemporary Native American and Regional Art
A GuestLife New Mexico Great Gallery
To enter Blue Rain Gallery’s spacious display rooms is to immerse yourself in a modern manifestation of an ancient world. Offering the finest in contemporary Native American and regional art, the gallery features a unique array of painting, sculpture, pottery, jewelry, and kachinas. Among the internationally acclaimed artists whose museum-quality work is represented here is Tammy Garcia of Santa Clara Pueblo, whose visionary designs in clay, bronze, and glass interpret ancient tribal themes and symbols in fresh, contemporary ways. Tlingit glass artist Preston Singletary is recognized for his groundbreaking techniques and distinctive renderings of Native American motifs that combine classical shapes with a cutting-edge, modern aesthetic. Tony Abeyta’s highly evocative paintings are coveted by collectors for their metaphorical imagery and ethereal power; Jim Vogel’s oils honor the storytelling tradition of New Mexico’s Native American and Hispanic cultures while evoking the timeless enchantment of the New Mexico landscape. Clay artist Richard Zane Smith produces pottery whose designs are so intricate that they appear at first to be delicate baskets made of finely woven fibers. Innovative jewelry artists like Mike Bird Romero and Maria Samora, among others, use traditional materials like silver, turquoise, and coral as well as 18-Karat gold and diamonds to execute imaginative designs of deceptive simplicity and refinement. The gallery’s knowledgeable staff is happy to elaborate on the provenance and meaning of the Native symbolism, the historic role of the art forms, and the artists’ techniques, making a visit here as much a cultural experience as it is an exploration of fine art.
